What to check before your travel insurance renews

Annual multi-trip travel policies auto-renew on the anniversary date. The pre-renewal review is about checking the cover still matches the year ahead — destinations, traveller ages, and any medical conditions.

Why this matters

Annual travel insurance is built around the upcoming year of travel. A renewal is the natural moment to confirm destinations, declarations and trip-length caps still match the trips you are likely to take.

What to check before your travel insurance renews

Destinations and regions

Check whether the renewing policy is Europe-only or worldwide, and whether worldwide includes higher-premium regions such as the USA and Canada.

Medical declarations

Any condition diagnosed or changed since the policy was bought needs to be declared at renewal. An undeclared change can invalidate a claim.

Maximum trip duration

Annual policies usually cap the length of any single trip (often around 30 days). If you plan a longer trip, the cap matters.

Cancellation cover limit

Check that the cancellation cover limit is high enough for the cost of trips you have already booked.

Age limits and activity cover

Confirm the age band on the renewal and any winter sports or hazardous activity cover, if relevant for the year ahead.

Timing window

When to act

Two-to-three weeks before the renewal date is usually enough to make medical declarations and confirm destinations. If a trip is already booked, decide before the next departure.
