What to check before your fixed energy tariff ends

When a fixed energy deal ends, the supplier typically moves the household to a standard variable tariff under the Ofgem default tariff cap. The decision sits between staying on a new fixed deal or defaulting to the cap.

Why this matters

Ofgem updates the default tariff cap on a quarterly cycle. The level of the cap, and the fixed deals available against it, change between cycles — so the right answer at the end of one fix is not the right answer at the end of the next.

Most fixed tariffs allow a switch in the final 49 days without exit fees. That window is the practical action period.

What to check before your fixed energy tariff ends

Tariff end date

Confirm the precise day the fixed tariff ends. Default movement to the variable tariff usually happens the day after.

Default tariff / standard variable rate

Check the rate the household will move to and how it sits against the current Ofgem default tariff cap.

Meter readings

Submit a reading on or close to the end date. That gives a clean break between the old tariff and the new one.

Direct debit amount

Check whether the direct debit changes when the tariff changes. A new tariff often resets the assumed annual consumption.

Exit fees

Most fixed tariffs allow a switch in the final 49 days without exit fees. Confirm the rule on your tariff if you are considering switching early.

Timing window

When to act

The Ofgem 49-day window before the tariff end is the practical action period. Earlier than that, exit fees may apply on the current deal. Later than the end date, the household is already on the variable rate.
