What to check before an app subscription renews

App subscriptions auto-renew on the anniversary of signup or trial end. Cancellation usually happens in the App Store or Google Play account — not inside the app itself.

Why this matters

New UK subscription rules under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 introduce reminder and cooling-off requirements for consumer subscriptions, but the cancellation step still happens in the store account.

Deleting the app is not the same as cancelling the subscription. Free trials roll into paid charges automatically unless cancelled before the trial end date.

What to check before an app subscription renews

Next billing date

Find the next renewal date in the App Store or Google Play subscription list, not in the app itself.

Renewal frequency

Check whether the subscription is weekly, monthly, or annual. Weekly app subscriptions add up quickly and are easy to forget.

Free-trial end date

If the subscription is currently in a free-trial period, confirm the day the trial ends and the first charge applies.

Whether the app is still in use

Look at when you last opened the app. Subscriptions to apps that have fallen out of use are the most common silent cost.

Family sharing / managed account

If the subscription was set up under a family-sharing or managed account, confirm which account is being charged.

Timing window

When to act

The week before the next billing date is the natural window. Store-managed subscriptions can be cancelled at any time before the renewal date without losing access until then.
